In with the new

In with the new

By Jack Frost
Neujahrsmarathon Zurich is the first official marathon of the year – and half marathon, and 10km race. It starts on the first day of the year at the stroke of midnight – the very first second of the New Year. The winners’ performances head the list of official world best times of the year – at least for a while.

The marathon is run on a lap with the start and finish inside a sports hall. Runners pass through the sports hall at the end of each lap, which makes it attractive for supporters. Inside the hall there is music, places to sit and relax, and food and drink. It’s a good place to see in the New Year, even for non-runners. The starter’s gun fires at midnight, and runners head off out into the dark. They are accompanied by neighbourhood fireworks on all sides and, on the first lap, you even get to see the fireworks in the city centre - about 6km away – as if the whole show was designed just for you. This lasts for about an hour before fading. With fewer and fewer lights around, the race takes on a completely new character in which wearing a headlamp is definitely recommended. The course is as flat as you could hope for along the banks of the River Limmat (the main river draining Lake Zurich). The only inclines are the ramps which link the bridges at the river crossings…

Marathon of choice

Marathon of choice

By Norrie Williamson
The Maritzburg Marathon has never focused on elite athletes, so when Munyaradzi Jari burst through the finish tape in the fastest time yet run in the 17-year history of the race no great fuss was made.

The Zimbabwean had held off several challenges in the second half of the race from his compatriot Samuel Pazanga, who finally capitulated on the short steep climb 3km from the finish. For Pazanga, who held the previous best time, those final kilometres were the longest of the day as he lost over two minutes before reaching the finish line and losing his event record by 31 seconds. Melanie van Rooyen, third in the South African Marathon Championships three weeks earlier, passed Candyce Hall shortly after halfway and went on to dominate the women’s race. In the first half of each year South Africans run marathons the way the rest of the world do their long slow distance training – every 10 to 14 days – as an attempt to prepare and qualify for the two biggest distance running events in the country. These are the Old Mutual Two Oceans 56km Marathon and the Comrades 90km Ultra Marathon - both AIMS members…

A landmark event

A landmark event

By Sophia Shih
Taipei is the capital of Chinese Taipei, with a population of three million people. New Taipei City comprises the suburbs which surround it, with four million people living in 29 different districts. Since their unification in 2010 New Taipei City has become the world’s most populous suburb (overtaking Yokohama in Japan).

The Marathon starts in the Wan Li district, to the northeast of central Taipei, and traces a route northwest through the Jinshan District to the northernmost district of New Taipei, Shimen. It is from these three districts that the race “Wan Jin Shi” derives its name. The New Taipei City government has enthusiastically backed the Wan Jin Shi International Marathon joining AIMS for this year’s race, which was a landmark event for Chinese Taipei. The course follows the coastline of northern Taiwan for more than 20km, giving runners the opportunity to appreciate the scenic landscape. With gentle sea breezes and the lapping of the waves running the Marathon on this route does not just involve the physical effort, but brings with it a rare audio-visual experience. The race attracted about 12,000 runners. In addition to 100 international participants coming from 18 overseas countries, those who signed up for the marathon via the internet grew significantly compared to last year…

The Rock ‘n’ Roll USA Marathon is the only marathon run entirely within the US Capital, Washington DC. For the last two years it has been part of the Competitor Group’s international Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series. The largest field ever came to the US Capital, from all 50 US states and 32 other countries. Among them were 26 children from the Mark Twain Middle School, in nearby Alexandria, Virginia who participated in the first and final mile of the race in tribute to the 20 infant schoolchildren and six teachers who died in the Sandy Hook shooting in Connecticut three months previously. They were inspired by their teacher, Eric Henderson, who ran the half marathon. This year’s race featured a new start within the shadow of the Washington Monument on Constitution Avenue, close to the White House…

Running into history

A marathon of two ages

By John Glover
When Greg Hannon and Sue Boreham won the inaugural Belfast City Marathon they were pioneering a mass participation event which in 2013 will celebrate 32 years of existence and innovation. But the City was not bereft of the 42.2km challenge before that date. The first Northern Ireland Championship event took place in Belfast in 1938 and continued to be held annually in the city into the 1980s, interrupted only for a three-year period during World War II.
